Vermes Géza: Jézus és a judaizmus világa című tanulmánykötete a szerző korábban elhangzott előadásainak szövegeit tartalmazza összegyűjtött, szerkesztett formában. Vermes történészként közelít az evangéliumok Jézusához, definíciója szerint az evangéliumokat akarja kutatni, hangsúlyozottan „a rendelkezésünkre álló újszövetségi szövegek alapján”. Elemzéseinek gyakorlatilag két szála van: egyrészt hatalmas rabbinikus irodalmi ismeretéből mindenre talál párhuzamokat, amiket elemez nyelvi, történeti és irodalmi szempontból; ez munkáinak óriási értéke; másrészt, történészként egyszerű hipotéziseket közöl minden elemzés és tény nélkül, azokat konklúziónak nevezve. Az elszórtan jelenlévő információk alapján azonban egyértelműen kiderül, hogy az Újszövetséget nem tekinti önmagában elégséges bizonyítéknak, annak nagy részét a szöveg- és formakritikai iskola elvei alapján szubjektíven szelektálja és elutasítja. Vermes könyvei megkerülhetetlenek a téma kutatói számára, mert hihetetlen gazdag háttérinformációkat nyújtanak Jézus életének zsidó környezetére vonatkozóan, mellyel eredményesen segíti visszahelyezni Jézust eredeti zsidó gyökereibe, de történészként levont következtetése nem hiteles, mivel az előzetes prekoncepcióit nem igazolta a források bemutatása után. Vermes könyvei a jelzett problémák ellenére is szeretném, ha legalább magyar nyelvterületen eljutnának arra a szintre, mint az általa veszélyforrásként kikiáltott Starck-Billerbeck kommentár, hogy a Jézus élete iránt érdeklődők az egyes evangéliumi eseményekhez, ha csak másodkézből is, de rabbinikus forrásokat olvassanak, tágítva ezzel világképüket s visszahelyezzék a kereszténység Krisztusát a galileai helyszínekre, népe a zsidóság körébe, mely hidat képez ugyanis a keresztény zsidó kapcsolatban, továbbá segít megelőzni az antiszemitizmus – különösen a keresztény antiszemitizmus és antijudaizmus – erősödését, illetőleg feléledését.
