Vermes Géza's study collection, Jesus and the World of Judaism, contains texts from the author's previous lectures, compiled and edited in a single volume. Vermes approaches the Jesus of the Gospels as a historian, with the aim of researching the Gospels on the basis of the available New Testament texts. On the one hand, he draws parallels from his extensive knowledge of rabbinic literature and analyses these parallels from a linguistic, historical and literary point of view, which is an important value of his work. On the other hand, as a historian, he presents simple hypotheses without analysis and calls them conclusions. However, it is clear from the scattered information that he does not consider the New Testament as sufficient evidence in
itself; he subjectively selects and rejects large parts of it on the basis of the principles of the textual and formal schools of criticism. Vermes' books are indispensable to scholars in the field because they provide incredibly rich background information on the Jewish context of Jesus' life, helping to successfully reposition Jesus within his original Jewish roots. Nevertheless, the conclusions that Vermes draws as a historian are not credible because his preconceived notions are not supported by the sources presented. Despite these problems, I would like to see Vermes's books reach the same level in the Hungarian-speaking world as Starck-Billerbeck's commentary, which Vermes sees as a threat. In this way, those interested in the life of Jesus would be able to read rabbinical sources on specific Gospel events, albeit secondhand, thereby broadening their worldview and
re-establishing the Christ of Christianity in the Galilean environment and among the Jewish people. This approach builds a bridge in the Christian-Jewish relationship and helps to prevent the strengthening or revival of anti-Semitism, especially Christian anti-Semitism and anti-Judaism.
