In their ethnographic descriptions, the ancient authors present the matriarchal or matrilineal system prevailing among different peoples. The sources report on matrilineal derivation and inheritance, so the dominant social position of women is general, but at least equality, and in some cases the political and/or military hegemony of women is typical. Within Greek mythology as a whole, the matricide of Orestes of Mycenae, the fate of Alkmaion, one of the heroes of the Theban-Argosian folklore, the story of Meleagros of Calüdonia, and thus the belief about the Erinnians and the Moiras, are of decisive importance for the examination of this question. According to Bachofen, the author of Mother's Law, mothers once had almost unlimited power in society. This is not accepted by the professional critics, because they do not see that such a level of dominance can be proven, but based on the myths mentioned above, it is highly probable that women played a certain leadership role in the age of Neolithic farming cultures in some areas of the eastern Mediterranean.
