The impact of the Alcoholic Parent on the Development of Gender Roles

Abstract

As a consequence of the harmful effects of parental alcoholism, a dysfunctional family dynamic develops, which distorts the personality development of the affected child or adolescent. The purpose of this thesis is to examine how the learning of gender role behaviour and the development of masculine and feminine behavioural patterns fail to occur in such environments. Traumatic experiences are often unconsciously reactivated in adult relationships after a shorter or longer period of time. Difficulties in managing conflict and emotions, depressive reactions, attachment issues, and anxiety related to sexuality may emerge. In such cases, the personality becomes stuck, and compensatory mechanisms can lead to the development of deviant behaviours. This research highlights the importance of spreading awareness, which may encourage the affected people to acknowledge their problems and seek help.
